NURS 2004 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Adrenal Medulla, Bronchus, Neuron
Document Summary
Divisions of the nervous system: central = brain and spinal cord, peripheral= Somatic motor system = voluntary movement of muscles. Autonomic nervous system = involuntary processes (regulation of heart, secretory glands and smooth muscles) Cholinergic: slowing of heart rate, increased gastric secretion, emptying of the bladder, emptying of the bowel, focusing the eye for near vision, constricting the pupil, contracting bronchial smooth muscle. Epinephrine/ norepinephrine: regulating the cardiovascular system, regulating body temperature, implementing the fight-or-flight reaction. Compensation for loss of blood, primarily by causing vasoconstriction. Sweating (stimulates secretion from sweat glands-keeps body cool) Shunting blood away from the skin and viscera and into skeletal muscles. Dilating the pupils (perhaps to enhance visual acuity) Mobilizing stored energy, thereby providing glucose for the brain and fatty acids for muscles. Some are complementary rather than opposite (e. g. male ejaculation: parasympathetic nerves give erection while ejaculation is controlled by sympathetic) Blood vessels are only innervated by sympathetic nerves.
