Simple partial- no loss of conciousness, lasts 20-60 seconds. Complex partial- loss of conciousness (and responsiveness), lasts 45 to 90 seconds. Secondary generalized- start as simple or complex, then evolve to tonic-clonic. Consciousness is lost, lasts 1 to 2 minutes. (2) generalized seizures: Tonic-clonic- (grand mal) typically lasts 90 seconds of less. Absence- brief loss of consciousness, lasts 10-30 seconds. In the head and neck= head drop, in the trunk area= drop attack. Can be in one limb (focal) or in the entire body (mass) Status epilepticus- persists for 15-30 minutes or longer or a series of reoccurent seizures during which the pt does not regain consciousness. Febrile seizures- fever associated seizures among children 6 months- 5years (not at risk for epilepsy later in life) Seizures are initiated by discharge from a group of hyper-excitable neurons called a focus. In partial seizures, excitation undergoes limited spread from the focus to adjacent cortical areas.
