SOCSCI 1SS3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-2: Octreotide, Growth Hormone, Bone Density
Document Summary
Indication/purpose, 2) mechanism of action, 3) adverse effects, 4) contraindications and 5) precautions. Increases height in patients with short stature (associated with genetic disease) and in adults as replacement therapy. Increases protein synthesis and lean muscle mass, bone density, lipid mobilization from fat stores, improved lipid profile. Blood pressure, body weight, fluid intake and urine output must be monitored. Big increase in body weight (holding onto too much water and they"ve received too much drug) Make sure fluid intake has stabilized and their not drinking copious amounts of water. Tsh must be overprescribe d (narrow therapeutic index), nervousness/ anxiety, weight loss, diarrhea, intolerance to heat, tachycardia monitored regularly. Increased metabolism, weight loss, improved tolerance to environment al temp. , increased activity levels, increased pulse. Inhibit t3 and t4 synthesis and disrupt conversion of t4 to t3 in target tissues. Doesnt prevent binding between thyroid hormone and receptor. Permanentl y destroys follicular cells in overactive thyroid gland.
