Document Summary

The hypothalamus and pituitary gland regulate the function of numerous endocrine glands. The hypothalamus secretes hormones that regulate the function of the anterior pituitary. The hypothalamus controls the posterior pituitary through neuronal signalling. Neuronal signaling between the hypothalamus and posterior pituitary. Very few hypothalamic hormones have clinical applications; as it is often more effective to treat the disease state at the target organ. I. e. replace thyroid hormone if there is not enough. Arise due to tumours, surgery, radiation therapy, infection, injury, infarction, hemorrhage or congenital defects. Many different hormones are produced by the pituitary, but only a few are used clinically. Anterior pituitary hormone stimulating growth & metabolism. Stored and released by the posterior pituitary gland in response to increased serum osmolality. Adh acts on the kidneys to increase water resorption. Deficiency results in short stature (children), dyslipidemia, decreased muscle mass, central adiposity, decreased bone density, increased cardiovascular mortality.
