HTHSCI 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Levothyroxine, Glucocorticoid, Acromegaly
Document Summary
Lecture 7- drugs for pituitary, thyroid and adrenal disorders. Hypothalamus and pit gland regulate function of numerous endocrine glands. Hypothalamus secretes hormones that regulate function of ant pit. Hypo controls post pit through neuronal signalling. Pit hormone: acth, gh, fsh/lh, post- ad. Very few hypothalamic hormones have clinical applications as more effective to treat disease state at target organ. Pit disorders: arise due to tumours, surgery, radiation therapy, infection , infarction, hemorrhage, congenital defects, many different hormones produced by pit- but few used clinically. Growth hormone- aka somatotropin: ant pit hormone stimulating growth and metabolism- important in lifespan, somatotropin- endogenous ligand- hormone- deficiency results in short stature children, dyslipidemia, decreased muscle mass, central adiposity, decreased bone density, inc cardiovascular mortality, somatropin(agonist drug) Induce up to 15 cm of growth in gh deficient children.
