Chapter eight: group processes influence in social groups. Forming relationships with other people fulfills a number of basic purpose human needs opinions members. Social roles: there may be an innate need to belong to social groups, people in all cultures are motivated to from relationships with, groups become an important part of our identity other people. Groups to which we belong play an important role in defining who we expect to be in the future: they also play an important role in motivating people to become involved in social change. Most social groups range from 3-6 members. If groups become too large, you cannot interact with all the members. Social facilitation: when the presence of others energizes us. The presence of others increases physiological arousal. Why the presence of others causes arousal: other people cause us to become particularly alter and vigilant, they make us apprehensive about how we"re being evaluated, and they distract us form the task at hand.
