The propinquity effect the finding that the more we see and interact with people, the more likely they are to become our friends. Functional distance certain aspects of architectural design that make it likely that some people will come into contact with each other more often than others. Similarity in many domains is an important predictor of attraction in both friendships and romantic relationships: similarity effects are most likely to be found for traits that are related to one"s value system. For some people, similarity in terms of activity preferences is a stronger predictor of attraction than is similarity of attitudes.
