Controlled thinking - effortful / deliberate / conscious. People as everyday theorists: automatic thinking with schemas. Schemas - mental structures people use to organise their knowledge about the social world that influence the information people notice, think about and remember. Not being able to form schemas can be disorienting and perpetually confusing because everything you meet is new (can"t relate past experiences to new experiences) Fill in the blanks with information / ideas that are schema consistent. Lawyer is more likely to argue whereas construction worker is more likely to be physically aggressive. Accessibility - the extent to which schemas are at the forefront of the mind and are therefore likely to be used when making social judgments. Chronically - constantly active and ready to be applied. Someone suffering from depression is likely to attribute certain behaviours in others as a sign of depression because that is their experience with the behaviour.
