PSYCH 2C03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Social Cognition, Immunosuppression, Representativeness Heuristic
Document Summary
Social cognition - the way people think about themselves and the social world, how they select, interpret, remember and use social information to make judgements and decisions. We"re able to make complex judgements about people very quickly, can make costly mistakes in this process. Two kinds of social cognition - quick and automatic, and careful, controlled thinking. We have an autopilot that monitors the environment, draws conclusions, directs behaviour. People can override automatic type of thinking. People size up new situation very quickly - figure out important information about it to know how to behave. Do this type of think quickly and effortlessly to cut corners in everyday life. Automatic thinking: thinking that is nonconscious, unintentional, involuntary and effortless. People as everyday theorists: automatic thinking with schemas. Auto thinking helps us understand new situations by relating them to our prior experiences.
