The culmination of anxiety and related disorders. Not uncommon for ocd individuals to experience severe generalized anxiety (gad), panic attacks and major depression; all occurring simultaneously. Establishing control over the dangerous events in life seems hopeless. The dangerous event is a thought, image or an impulse that the client attempts to avoid: fight this all day, every day sometimes for most of their lives. Obsessions = intrusive and mostly nonsensical thoughts / images / urges that the individual tries to resist or eliminate. Compulsions = the thoughts or actions used to suppress the obsessions and provide relief: can be either behavioural or mental (handwashing vs. praying, believed to reduce stress or prevent a dreaded event. In a one-year period, the prevalence is about 1 % Estimates of the lifetime prevalence of ocd range from 1. 6 2. 3 % Obsessions and compulsions can be arranged along a continuum.
