Motivation = degree of determination, drive, or desire with which an individual approaches (or avoids) a behaviour; direction and intensity of one"s effort. Choosing to enage in one activity instead of another implies motivation: intrinsic motivation: emanates from within. Fun, sense of challenge, personal improvement: extrinsic motivation: driven by a force outside the individual. Health / chd prevention, social recognition, tangible reinforcers like money, t-shirts, water bottles, certificates. Expectancy-value approach: motivation (and thus, behaviour) was predicted on the individual"s expected behavioural outcome and on the value the individual placed on that predicted outcome. Tra predicts single-instance activity (original application was voting) Intention determined by attitude and sense of a subjective norm: attitude: person"s positive / negative thoughts concerning performance of behaviour, and is influenced by: Individual beliefs about consequences of carrying out action (is it actually worth it?) Individual"s evaluation (+/-) of consequences (is it important, does he care?)
