GEOG 1HB3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Aspero, Urban Sprawl, Megacity
Document Summary
Permanent settlements began to form with the introduction of agriculture: developed in association with specific economic activities, initially producing food for subsistence, later distributing surpluses, and later into trade and industrial centres. Currently, only a fraction of human depend on hunting and gathering or agriculture activities that involve regular movements from place to place. Agricultural settlements are called rural, non-agricultural are called urban. An urbanizing world: 2007 is the year here urban population exceeded the rural population. This change is a significant turning point both in terms of human settlement and in the relations between human and land: it was not until the industrial revolution the pace of urbanization picked up. Small population centre: population between 1000 and 29999. Medium population centre: population between 30000 and. Large population centre: population greater than 100000. Conceptualizing cities: city and urban area are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean the same, a city is a legally defined entity, a municipality.
