GEOG 1HB3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Urban Geography, Harappa, Sanxingdui
Document Summary
Urban geography, which focuses on cities and towns, has two main approaches. First, urban geographers investigate systems of cities by understanding the spatial distribution of cities and the complex patterns of interactions between them. The second, geographers study cities as systems, the human geographic patterns and interactions within cities and the internal structure of cities. Urbanization: the spread and growth of cities; an increasing proportion of a population living in urban areas (cities and towns) Urban area: a concentration of people living at a relatively high density and perhaps engaging in some forms of work and not others (ie. manufacturing and office work, as opposed to farming) Countries can change their definition of urban, by raising or lowering the minimum number of residents required for a settlement to qualify for urban status- the percentages of urban and rural dwellers in that country will change accordingly.
