Globalization is considered from cultural, political, and economic perspectives. Location decisions are made to minimize the effort required to overcome the friction of distance. Evident in the first law of geography: distance can be measured in several different ways, such as physical, time, cost, cognitive, and social. Converging locations: the friction of distance seems to be decreasing in many distance, some are even frictionless, time-space convergence. Travel times typically decrease with improvements in transportation technology: can calculate a convergence rate as the average rate at which the time required to move from one place to another decreases over time. Overcoming distance: transportation: by constructing transport system, it can reduce distance friction and the costs of interaction. Transport systems are used to move people and materials, to allow for spatial interaction and to link centres of supply and demand. Evolution of transportation: three processes characterize the evolution of transport systems:
