So basically your boss wants you to manage up. People like working for those who have influence with their superiors because it enhances their won status. Many people are uncomfortable about the idea of managing their bosses. We are not in control in this relationship as we are in our relation with our subordinates. We try to protect ourselves in a relation where we feel we have little control and power. Different people will interpret the same behavior from a boss in different ways.
