COMMERCE 1B03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Fundamental Attribution Error, Personal Identity, Impression Formation
Document Summary
Perception is the process of interpreting the messages of our senses to provide order and meaning to the environment. It helps sort out and organize the complex and varied input received by our senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. Key word is interpreting- people base their actions on the interpretation of reality that their perception provides rather than on actually reality. The perceivers experience, needs, and emotions can affect his/her perception of a target. Experience- one of the most important characteristics that influences their impressions. Past experiences develop expectations affect current perceptions. Our needs influence perception by causing us to perceive what we wish to perceive. Perceptual defence- our perceptual system defending us against unpleasant. Emotions (anger, happiness, fear) influences our perceptions emotions- we see/hear what we want to see/hear. Ambiguous targets are susceptible to interpretation and addition. Perceivers have a need to solve such ambiguities. Providing more info about a target does not always improve perceptual accuracy.
