PSYC 408 Chapter Notes - Chapter lecture 9 reading : Clinical Formulation, Therapeutic Relationship, Nomothetic
Document Summary
There is a lack of evidence indicating whether formulations are reliable. In other words, we don"t really know whether different therapists agree on a formulation for the same client. One of the roles of formulation is to act as a bridge between cbt theories and the experience of an individual. Cbt practitioners should start by assessing the problem in front of the client, then see whether there is some well-established treatment model and protocol that fits their presentation/problem. The processes that start (precipitants) a problem are not necessarily the same as the processes that keep it going. (maintenance factors) It is easier to get clear evidence about current processes than about original causes, which may have happened many years ago. It is also easier to change maintenance processes that are happening right now rather than to change developmental processes which occurred in the past. That said, knowing about the client"s developmental history can still be important for several reasons.
