Document Summary

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have been described for thousands of years, but were previously relatively rare and were not seen as a form of maladjustment. Around 1970"s, bulimia nervosa was identified as a new eating disorder. Bulimia nervosa involves periods of food restriction alternating with periods of binge eating, where excessive amounts of food are consumed. Binges are then followed by compensation through vomiting, laxative or diuretic abuse, her exercising or starvation. Anorexia nervosa sufferers develop a fear of fatness, perceive themselves as fat and reduce their food intake to the point of emaciation. An overemphasis on shape and weight for determining self worth. Due to lack of understanding, conflicts between individuals with anorexia and their parents are common; causing many to hide or secretly dispose of food, eat alone, or lie that they have eaten already. Intense fear of gaining weight/becoming fat paradoxical fear, as they are underweight.
