Document Summary
There are plenty of barriers to modifying attitudes and behaviour related to cutting carbon emissions: Persuasion theorists propose that there are two basic ways of trying to persuade people: two routes to persuasion. Elm developed by petty and cacioppo: (cid:862)(cid:272)e(cid:374)tral route(cid:863) and peripheral route to persuasion. Hsm developed by chaiken: (cid:862) (cid:455)ste(cid:373)ati(cid:272) route(cid:863) and heuristic route to persuasion. Both come to the same idea: people sometimes process persuasive messages rather mindlessly and effortlessly and sometimes very deeply and attentively. Some types of persuasive appeals are more effective when the target audience is largely on autopilot and other types will be more effective when the audience is alert and attentive. I(cid:374)stead, the perso(cid:374) (cid:373)ight (cid:271)e persuaded si(cid:373)pl(cid:455) (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause the (cid:373)sg (cid:272)o(cid:373)es fro(cid:373) a(cid:374) (cid:862)e(cid:454)pert(cid:863) sour(cid:272)e. In the peripheral route, the person largely relies on simple heuristics (rules of thumb) in deciding how to respond to a persuasive msg.
