We define thought by its observable consequences by whether the device functions like a thinking, human brain. If a computer has bits of information it can speak chinese but it doesn"t mean that it understands what it"s saying. Problem in the chinese box, the computer is me and in other computer programs, they have do not understand more than i do. Schank"s programs the aim is to simulate the human ability to understand stories. Have the ability to develop a representation of the sort of information that human beings have on a certain topic. What the machine and its program do explains the human ability to understand the story and answer questions about it: even though the computer and the program are functioning, there is no understanding.
