The falls in deaths from childhood fevers such as diphtheria, scarlet fever and whooping cough were due to better nutrition, sanitations and living conditions compared to vaccinations or antibiotics. Trauma is still the major cause of death in males between 10 and 40. The evolution of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria has led to the resurgence of professional interests in infectious disease. Malaria that is resistant to normally used drugs has posed a serious threat to first world travellers. They are threatened by the breakdown of hygiene in third world countries.
