Document Summary
Why do we join groups? being in groups. we have an innate need to be social. it helps us define who we are, and motivates us to become involved in social change. they help establish social norms. Approximately 3-6 members. once the group is larger, not everyone will interact. Low diversity. members tend to be alike in age, sex and interests. they operate in ways that encourage similarity. Specify how group members should behave. when people violate them too often, they are shunned or, in more extreme cases, pressured to leave the group. Shared expectations by the group members about how each should behave. people know what to expect from each other, but harmful when one loses themselves in their role and, in the process, lose their personal identity. Ex: a boss and an employee are expected to behave differently in that setting. Simple/well-learned task = dominant response is accurate. Complex/new task = dominant response is to make mistakes.
