Document Summary

Stable set of characteristics that determine how you act & interact with your environment. People have stable traits that influence their behavior. Weak situations: it isn"t clear how you should behave - there are few rules, roles aren"t defined, reward & punishments are not well understood. Strong situations: clear roles, rules, rewards & punishments. Trait activation theory: traits lead to certain behaviors only when they make sense within a situation. High internals believe they control their own future, while high externals believe external events and luck determine their fate. Low self-monitors act the same way in all situations - they don"t moderate their behavior or emotions. High self-monitors carefully observe what others say and how they feel in order to control how they act and therefore how others see them. High self-monitors tend to be more involved in their jobs, to perform at a higher level, and to be more likely to emerge as leaders.
