Two or more people interacting interdependently to achieve a common goal. Interaction is the most basic aspect of a group it suggests who is in the group and who is not. Interdependence means that group members rely to some degree on each other to accomplish goals. Group membership is important because: exerts influence on us (beliefs, attitudes, status, provides a context in which we are able to exert influence on others. Informal groups emerge naturally in response to the common interests of organizational members: they are seldom sanctioned by the organization. Stages of group development: this process applies mainly to new groups that have never met before, not all groups go through these stages of development, some teams may skip certain stages. A model of group development that describes how groups with deadlines are affected by their first meetings and crucial midpoint transactions. 3 parts = phase 1, midpoint transition, and phase 2.
