Document Summary
Aging as a disease or a life process. Aging is a natural process as the body and mind develops, grows, matures and deteriorates. Medicalization of aging: the process by which the natural process of aging is reconceptualised as a disease that is to be addressed by a range of medical interventions. Cultural gerontophobia: a social and/or cultural fear of aging that is often exhibited with an obsession with maintaining a young appearance or demeanour in a youth-obsessed culture. Healthy aging: a process of positive development and progression through life. Social gerontology focuses on aging as a social process although it is a physiological process. Early theories focused on adaptation to aging and the role of social structures in easing off the transition to old age. Disengagement theory saw aging as a process of withdrawal from social life and roles. Activity theory sees successful aging as an active engagement in the social life.
