Medicalization: the medical profession has rst claim to jurisdiction over the label of illness and anything to which it may be attached irrespective of its capacity to deal with it effectively (freidson, 1970) Medical establishment has become a major threat to health (illich, 1976: because more and more things are being de ned as medical. Ie; adhd; diagnosis of bad behaved children instead of treating them with restrains etc, we are now treating them with chemicals Some natural process or normal conditions have been rede ned as bad or disease. Moved beyond actual diseases to rede ne people lives as medical. Women have had a lot more medicalization (all natural process; pregnancy, birth, menopause) pregnancy is a condition/illness that takes 9 months to cure. Components of medicalization: de ning a problem in medical terms. De ning menopause as illness, old age another idea: using medical language to describe a problem.
