Psychology is devoted to many areas of specialisation other than to the mental health profession. Sources of knowledge; science is the only acceptable knowledge source: superstition- knowledge based on subjective feelings, interpreting random events as non-random or believing in magical events. Not reliable or valid because it is not based on observation or hypothesis: intuition- knowledge gained without being consciously aware of its source. We sometimes assume knowledge based on events we have observed. However, events may be misinterpreted and not representative of all events in that category. Illusory correlation = the perception of a relationship that doesn"t exist. For example, we are more likely to notice when couples conceive after adopting than when couples don"t conceive after adopting: authority- knowledge gained from those we view as authority figures.
