24 views2 pages

Document Summary

Judith thomson"s 1990 account of the trolley problem. She wants to explain why it"s not in general okay to kill one to save five and this is an exception. She just wants to explain why a few cases are exceptions and what makes the difference. In 2006 she changed her mind and has rejected this solution which will be discussed. It is in all of our interests, in a special sort of way, that people kill one to save five in trolley cases. Suppose the situation arises: there is a 5 in 6 chance you will be in the group of 5. If we don"t adopt the kill one you will have the 5 in 6 chance of dying. If you do adopt the kill one you will have the 1 in six of chance of dying. It is not permissible to kill one to save five in this case.
