Document Summary

Hydrophobic molecules are important in nature b/c they won"t dissolve. They associate with each other b/c they"re not like water. These are important in cellular structures (membranes: learn about the water cycle in the book. Water (h2o) us a balance if h2o, h+, oh: very small percentage of water molecules are ions, pure water has an equal concentration of each h+ (hydrogen) and oh- (hydroxide) ions. Acid: an acid is a compound that donates h+ to a solution. Ex: hydrochloric acid (hcl), found in stomach acid. Acidity of the solution will increase: strong acids are corrosive to metals, acids break down food in your digestive tract, generally sour in taste. Base: a base is a compound that accepts h+ from a solution. 7 is neutral below 7 is acidic higher than 7 is basic (a decrease in h+)
