Document Summary

Identify the major similarities and differences between public speaking and everyday conversation. Public speaking requires a different method of delivery. Discuss methods of controlling nervousness and making it work for, rather than against the speaker. Know that most nervousness is not visible. Interference can be external or internal to listeners: adapting to interference: speakers reaction/solution to inference in the audience, message: whatever a speaker communicates to someone else, feedback: the messages, usually nonverbal, sent from a listener to a speaker. Define ethnocentrism, and explain why speakers need to avoid it. Ethnocentrism: the belief that one"s own group or culture is superior to all other groups or cultures. Speakers need to be sensitive to people of all different cultural backgrounds. Speakers need to be alert to how factors might affect the responses of their listeners and adapt their message. It is important as a speaker to show respect for the cultures of the other people that they may be addressing.
