The average adult spends around 30 percent of her waking hours in conversation. Public speaking requires the same skills used in ordinary conversation: organizing your thoughts logically, tailoring your message to your audience, telling a story for maximum impact, adapting to listener feedback. Speechmaking has become more complex as cultural diversity increases. The meanings attached to gestures, facial expressions, and other nonverbal signals vary from culture to culture. Avoid ethnocentrism (the belief that one"s own group or culture is superior to all other groups or cultures) Show respect for the cultures of people they address. Listening can be helpful in almost every part of your life. When you engage in comprehensive listening or critical listening, you use your mind as well as your ears.
