When we really care about something, we seek to answer the why and what if questions that always emerge (p. 2) If we really care about communication, we have to study theory. When there"s no puzzle to be solved or the explanation is obvious, there"s no need to develop a theory : communication is puzzling, so we need theory. Theory is nothing more than a set of systematic hunches about the way things operate : not isolated ideas (a set of hunches, conclusions formed by other"s findings (informed hunches, relevant connections between concepts (systematic) If a theory is a set of hunches, it means we are not yet sure we have the answer. Communication is : difficult to define standard w/in the field, something we all do, something we can agree on. Communication is the relational process of creating and interpreting messages that elicit a response (griffin, 2009)
