Social stratification is systematic inequalities among groups of people: wealth and income (social class, racial inequality, gender inequality. Equality/inequality: ontology equality, equality of opportunity, equality of condition (the idea that we are all born equal, equality of outcome. Social mobility refers to the movement between different positions within a system of social stratification; usually occupational mobility. Horizontal moving side to side: ex. Vertical moving up or down: get a promotion in your job. Structural: types of jobs within a society has changed; gaining service sector jobs in the economy. Exchange someone moves down someone goes up: we are exchanging jobs in society. Massive growth in inequality between the rich and the poor: called the great u-turn . Shrinking of the working class, with some growth in middle class and working poor. Growth of poverty and the underclass : rate of poverty is increasing twice as fast as population.
