Document Summary

Ur = unconditioned response (salivation to food) Cr = conditioned response (salivation to bell) Habituation = when the organism gets used to something and is no longer curious. Excitatory association = cs leads to us; this is permanent (bell leads to food) Inhibitory association = cs does not lead to us; get stronger w/ extinction (bell leads to no food) Extinction = when the cr gradually disappears after the cs is presented by itself repeatedly; due to the buildup of inhibition. (each time the cs is presented without us, an inhibitory association is made) Spontaneous recovery = when the extinguished cr reappears after a rest interval at almost previous strength, and extinguished faster next time; due to the dissipation of inhibition. (inhibition is not permanent, but does not dissipate all the way) Rapid reacquisition = after the final extinction phase, if you re-condition the dog, it will learn the response at a faster rate than before.
