Document Summary

Within post 9/11 america, there has been a noticeable blurring of the boundaries between sport, commerce, and militarism. After 9/11 america have been considered to be in a perpetual state of war, terror, fear, and insecurity (silk, 2012). Hot nationalism usually occurs during times of immediate national crisis or attack; it is the extreme and explicit forms of nationalism, when people are proud to be part of their country and are not scared to display their pride. As 9/11 was a tremendous tragedy that befell our nation, americans all over were affected by this. Everywhere one turned, one was able to see signs of mourning and unity. As time passed, hot nationalism became and has become the new normal and expected, as there is constant perceived threat in america. Therefore, it has transformed into banal nationalism, is the form of nationalism that is taken for granted and unacknowledged. Sport spectacles respond to the fears and threats that americans feel.
