Document Summary

On the surface level, sport in small town communities seem to unify the town, but on a deeper level, small town sports reproduce the power structure within the communities. The wholesomeness of these communities are often romanticized. In order to get to that outcome, there are many steps that people have to take, which attract numerous people as they are all there for the common goal: for their team to win. However, behind the scenes and after comprehending the situation a little further, perspectives and outlooks are altered; people realize that the so called cohesive unit is actually just a community that continuously advances into further forms of inequality. There are gender hierarchies, ethnic/racial preferences, and social class inclinations even within the small town sport culture (foley, 1990). There is not one female sport that can attract or bring together as many fans as football does; the community simply does not support it as much as male sports.
