Document Summary

They are the form in which they are absorbed. All other carbohydrates have to digested to smaller units (monosaccharides) to be taken up by the body to be used as carbohydrates. Glucose is the main sugar used by the human body (blood sugar). Blood glucose regulation is crucial for health and the lack of control is an earmark of diabetes. When blood glucose is low, a hormone (glucagon) from the pancreas is released. Glucagon causes the liver to breakdown its stores of glycogen (which is composed of many glucoses) to glucose for release into the blood. When blood glucose is high, the pancreas releases a hormone (insulin) which causes cells to take up blood glucose and lower the blood level. Dietary fiber can be helpful in relieving constipation and diarrhea. Fiber (especially soluble fiber) can be helpful in reducing plasma cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease.
