In the united states, the demand for high standards has led to high-stakes tests. Student cognitive needs in high school are diverse: schools that accommodate every student combine personal attention and intellectual challenge. Identity achievement takes longer for contemporary adolescents than it did a half-century ago, when erikson first described it. Identity achievement occurs in many domains, including religion, politics, vocation, and sex: each of these remains important over the life span, but timing, contexts, and, often, terminology have changed, ethnic identity and gender identity have become more important. Like adults, adolescents experience diverse sexual needs and may be involved in short-term or long-term romances, depending in part on their peer group: early, exclusive sexual relationships are a sign of emotional immaturity.
