Chapter 9: age of onset puberty. Age 8 to 14 is the most likely age of visible onset. Girls start the process earlier than boys. Parts of the body that are directly involved in reproduction. Characteristic includes: being overly concerned about the nutrition label on a product: bulimia. Eating disorder characterized by binge eating and subsequent purging, usually by induced vomiting and/or use of laxatives. The prefrontal cortex is the last to mature. Limbic system (fear, emotional impulses) matures before the prefrontal cortex. Many adolescents are driven by the excitement of new experiences and sensations- forgetting the caution that their parents have tried to instill. When emotions are intense, especially when friends are around, the logical part of the brain shuts down.
