Document Summary

Pathways of pain: nociceptors can respond to mechanical, chemical, or thermal stimulation. Types of pain: cutaneous or deep somatic pain. Happens quickly, usually a tissue burning pain. Deep comes from deep body structures like muscles/tendons. Somatic pain: pain that is diffused/spread out (can"t pinpoint where it"s coming from: visceral pain. Pain from disease (e. g. colic pain from renal stone, not well localized: referred pain. Pain in an area that is different from where the pain actually started. Example: jaw pain or left arm pain in an mi. Due to overlapping of different nerves: nociceptive vs neuropathic pain. Short duration, has physiologic purpose (to seek help) Self-limiting: goes away when injury is reduced. Important to treat pain before it becomes severe give post-op patient pain medication before receptors become sensitive and extreme pain occurs: chronic pain. >6 month duration, often no purpose": no end/nothing good comes from it. Controlling chronic pain is difficult requires a professional team to take care of.
