CHEM 112
QUEST #3 STUDY QUIDE
Quest #2 is comprised of 40 multiple-choice questions. Some questions require minor math, most do not. Quests will
be collected at 12:55 so be sure and practice the questions many times so you can do them quickly. You will be given a
periodic table and the solubility rules.
1. Know the four factors that ‘drive’ chemical reactions – formation of a solid, etc.
2. Know what a strong electrolyte and a weak electrolyte are.
3. What happens to the spectator ions in a solution?
4. Be able to write an equation, from words, and balance it. (This means you need to know how to charge balance
– barium chloride is NOT BaCl, it is BaCl2.)
5. Be able to determine which product, if any, will precipitate (solubility rules).
6. Know how to write a balanced complete ionic equation and net ionic equation.
7. Be able to identify reactions based on product type – precipitation, oxidation-reduction, acid-base, combustion,
gas-forming.
8. Be able to identify reactions based on reaction pattern – synthesis, decomposition, single replacement,
exchange.
9. Use the solubility rules to determine (from a list) which compounds are insoluble in water.
10. Be able to identify spectator ions when given the two aqueous solutions that are mixed together.
11. Know the clues that a chemical reaction has taken place – gas formation, etc.
