After doing this lab, you are expected to: Know how a ferrofluid is prepared and the chemistry behind the synthesis. Understand the properties and uses of ferrofluids. Understand the importance of nanoparticles in a ferrofluid and how to control the size of nanoparticles during synthesis. Understand and be able to articulate how micelles are formed and their function in ferrofluid formation and property. Understand and be able to describe the molecular and intermolecular forces present in a ferrofluid. Prepare and identify the different properties of ferrofluid. Observe the behavior of ferrofluid when mixed with biodiesel. Do not get the ferrofluid liquid on your skin or clothing, as it will stain (possibly permanently). Use ammonia (also called ammonium hydroxide) under a snorkle. What is a ferrofluid? a ferrofluid is a colloid of magnetic particles within a liquid. They are unusual in that they act like a liquid that reacts to a magnetic field.
