Document Summary

Passive transport moves materials down their concentration gradient from high concentration to low concentration while active transport moves materials against their concentration gradient from low concentration to high concentration. Passive transport also uses no free energy and no carrier molecules except in facilitated diffusion. Mediated transport involves integral proteins with highly specific receptors. These are used to transport ions that require specific transport and is much faster than diffusion: give an example of each (active, passive, mediated) and explain why it serves as an example of that type of transport. Passive transport: if you place a sugar cube in a glass of water over time the sugar cube disappears or so it seams. What really happens is the concentration of the sugar cube at the bottom of the cup is more than the concentration at the top of the cup.
