Chapter 12: the family: family organization is the way that families try to control sexual behavior. In some societies it is a sign of status the more women they have it means they can afford them. It used to be that the average age was 17 for men and 19 for women. Infant mortality rate - # of deaths before 1st birthday: per 1,000 live birth, the reason why demographers pay close attention to this is because it is considered a society"s marker for standard of living. If mortality rates are heavily dependent on food supplies, the availability of medical care (prenatal and postnatal), availability of clean water and things like that, this will allow for newborn babies to survive. It would be taboo to have sex for the survival of the baby, the woman would have to breastfeed the baby for even 5 or 6 years.
