Early famous printer benjamin franklin (pennsylvania gazette in philadelphia) Franklin had independence from the gov"t because he was able to make a profit from printing, didn"t rely on gov"t subsidy. 1830s- the penny press emerged the idea was that you tried to sale papers. Telegraph changed reporting during the civil war speed became important.
