Document Summary
Economic depression- close to 5000 soldiers came back from the war into the states, their jobs are gone and there are not enough to replace; unemployment sky rockets. The government who had been regulating the economy pulls out and discontinues doing so. There is a period of economic boom and then goes into depression. Racial unrest- this happens in part because 350,000 blacks served in wwi they had secondary roles such as cooks. They all return to the south and set off anxieties among southern whites. They feel as though these blacks who experienced war and knew how to fight in a war were going to come back and go against all the laws already set into place and not follow their inferior roles; resist. Belief that these soldiers had a degree of racial freedom, so they think the war soldiers will be a problem.
