Socratic method, socrates believes alcibiades needs to know himself, so that he can not only give good advice to himself, but also to others (better vs worse). The first step to learning these things is to acknowledge your own ignorance: socrates believes you should know yourself . To follow this command we must know what we are. According to socrates, a human being can either be a body, soul, or body and soul. You cannot be a body because it is something that belongs to humans that is controllable. The body does not make rule over itself, only the human agent does.
