What is the first step to learning this: plato thinks that alcibiades needs to listen to socrates"s advice because socrates serves. Alcibiades as a mentor, in order for him to get a leg up in society. If alcib. wants to be a goods statesman, he needs to tame his desires and use philosophy to discover the good. Socratic method, socrates believes alcibiades needs to know himself, so that he can not only give good advice to himself, but also to others (better vs worse). The first step to learning these things is to acknowledge your own ignorance: socrates believes you should know yourself . To follow this command we must know what we are. How does he argue for his position: according to socrates, a human being can either be a body, soul, or body and soul. You cannot be a body because it is something that belongs to humans that is controllable.
