Girls 2-3x as likely to develop disorder. As many as 90% have another comorbid diagnosis. 25 in one year, 40 in 2 yrs, 70 in 5 yrs. At least 2 yrs, or 1 yr in children and adolescents. Risk factor: being female, and having mood disorder. Itp a - interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescent depression. Fix relationships and in turn lessen depression. Quicker cycles of depressive and hypomanic episodes. Symptoms but do not meet full criteria of either hypomanic or depressive episodes. Temper outbursts that are extremely out of proportion or strange for age. Must be present in 2 of 3 settings - school, home and peers. Medication: antipsychotics sometimes, stimulant medications to reduce irritability. Fewer than will show full recovery. Better outcome if earlier start, higher ses. 50-75% show full recovery in several years. At least once a week for 3 months. Iq and language development strongest predictor of better outcome.
