Peripheral habitats such as oceanic archipelagos are not evolutionary graveyard. Speciation in marine and terrestrial environments follow similar patterns but are not the same. Biodiversity hotspot produce and export new species but also accumulate biodiversity that was produced in peripheral ecosystems. Speciation in sea can occur in presence of gene flow. Occurs when divergent selection overwhelms the homogenizing effects of gene flow.
